FMA Congresses: Can Drinking Pepsi Help Save the Environment?

May 7, 2009

"We need to implement programs now so that ten, twenty, thirty or forty years from now, the Earth as we know it is healthy."

MONTREAL, QC, May 07, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- How could drinking a Pepsi possibly be environmentally friendly? Sure, it tastes great, and has stood for decades as a symbol of Americana, but environmentally friendly? How? Kevin Winston, Environmental Manager of the United States for the Pepsi Bottling Company wants to make that answer clear. Pepsi is doing everything in its power to act as a positive global citizen, not only through striving to constantly improve its product, but by also seeking to improve its environmental impact in the U.S. and abroad.

Winston recently offered a testimonial for one of the contractors helping Pepsi to achieve its goals. At the latest Progressive Energy and Environment Congress, organized by Joe Piazza and the FMA team in Atlanta, Georgia from the 20th to the 22nd of April, Winston gave a testimonial on behalf of congress vendor, Oakleaf Waste Management.

"I was here as a delegate for Oakleaf. Oakleaf is the company we use for waste outsourcing management. I was here to relay what it is they help us to do, and how they are helping us down the path of reaching one of our goals, which is reducing our waste until we reach a zero landfill emission. We want to have less than one percent of our waste go to landfills. We're giving testimonials and checking out a lot of other products and vendors in attendance that we can use. We're finding some really interesting stuff here, some things we were aware of, some things we weren't. We'll find more companies like Oakleaf here that can help us become environmentally friendly and energy efficient. The whole thing is about sustaining the environment ... we need to implement programs now so that ten, twenty, thirty or forty years from now, the Earth as we know it is healthy."

-Kevin Winston
Environmental Manager, Pepsi Bottling Co.

Many of the companies that attended FMA's event shared the sentiment. However, whereas most were looking to save money on energy costs as well, Pepsi was particularly intent on cleaning up the environment. It is the belief of Pepsi management that prioritizing environmental responsibility and operating as a morally sound company is not only good for its customers, but good for the bottom line as well. Recent gains in market share for Pepsi products around the world serve to illustrate Winston's point.

Since Pepsi was not a vendor at the FMA congress, but one of the many high profile attendees, Pepsi found the program to be extremely educational. They may have indeed found some new business partners at the Atlanta event, but most importantly they discovered new and better methods to help them operate in an environmentally friendly manner. So next time you crack the tab on an ice-cold Pepsi, you can relax knowing the money you spent on it didn't just afford you a refreshing treat, but helped clean up the Earth as well.
