Safety-Kleen Powers Recycle Center at Lowe's Motor Speedway with Solar Energy During NASCAR

October 15, 2009

Safety-Kleen Partners with Mobile Solar Power to Bring Renewable Energy to the NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Having played a key role in keeping NASCAR events "green" for decades, Safety-Kleen is now taking those efforts to the next level by incorporating solar power into NASCAR's on-track recycling program. During the October race weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC, Safety-Kleen will partner with Mobile Solar Power to generate all the electrical needs for the Safety-Kleen Recycle Center in use at the Charlotte track for the Dollar General 300 and NASCAR Banking 500 races.

Mobile Solar Power's SunSeeker portable solar power system will provide power to both the Safety-Kleen recycle center and the Safety-Kleen trackside office, including battery power when race activities continue after the sun has set. The recycling center provides for the safe collection of NASCAR race vehicle wastes, including used oil, fuels and antifreeze, produced during racing events. The Safety-Kleen recycle center also includes parts cleaning machines the race teams use to maintain their equipment.

"The oils, fuels and spill clean-up materials generated during a race are all turned back into reusable products," said Eric Zimmer, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Safety-Kleen. "We collect and recycle used oil and other fluids at NASCAR events all across the country, so it is a logical next step to use green energy to further our mission of environmental responsibility."

"Many racing venues have looked into solar, geo-thermal and wind power to begin incorporating alternative energy sources into motorsports on a large scale," said Drew Patey, director of Safety-Kleen Motorsports. "This is just the 'starting flag' on getting the message out that renewable energy is viable and an important part of our sustainable future."
