Wind advisory in effect, gusts could reach 40 to 50 miles per hour

PORTLAND, Ore. – Much of Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington is under a wind advisory Monday as gusts slam the area, breaking trees and causing power outages.

The National Weather Service in Portland issued a wind advisory in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

Winds out of the south are expected to reach 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts blowing at 40 to 50 miles per hour.

Forecasters say the wind will be the strongest Monday afternoon.

Even before 7 a.m., wind gusts were causing problems. More than 6,000 customers lost power in the Portland metro area.

In Cowlitz county, more than 20,000 customers were without power around 5 a.m.

The wind could cause property damage and drivers in large vehicles should take precautions in the windy conditions.

The wind advisory was issued for the following areas:

  • Lower Columbia
  • Greater Portland metro area
  • Central Willamette Valley
  • South Willamette Valley
  • Interstate 5 corridor in Cowlitz County
  • Greater Vancouver Area
  • St. Helens
  • Clatskanie
  • Hillsboro
  • Wilsonville
  • Oregon City
  • Gresham
  • Troutdale
  • Salem
  • McMinnville
  • Woodburn
  • Stayton
  • Dallas
  • Eugene
  • Springfield
  • Corvallis
  • Albany
  • Lebanon
  • Longview
  • Kelso
  • Castle Rock
  • Vancouver
  • Battle Ground
  • Ridgefield
  • Washougal
  • Yacolt
  • Amboy

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 2 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday at Coldwater Ridge Visitors Center, Mount St. Helens and Wind River Valley.
