Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 20
By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:
It is planned to demolish 12 wind farms within construction of Istanbul’s third airport (Istanbul New Airport), the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend Nov. 20.
The wind farms are located near the territory where the airport is being built, and may create difficulties for the airport’s activity in the future, according to the ministry.
The ministry added that it is currently in talks with the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources regarding the forthcoming work on the demolition of the wind farms.
The ministry also noted that about 75 percent of construction of Istanbul’s third airport has been completed.
“Istanbul’s third airport will be connected to the city center by a high-speed railway,” the ministry said.
The first phase of the airport will be commissioned on Oct. 29, 2018.
The airport will annually serve about 200 million passengers.
Currently, the construction of the first runway, the length of which is 3.7 kilometers, and the width is 60 meters, continues. According to the airport’s construction project, the second runway will be 4.1 kilometers long and 60 meters wide.
Currently, construction and assembling work is underway to build 28 bridges and a hydrometeorological tower at the airport. More than 31,000 employees are involved in the construction work.
About 300 passenger and service elevators will be installed at Istanbul’s third airport.
Earlier, a source in the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend that the construction of the airport will cost 10 billion Turkish liras ($2.58 billion as of Nov. 20).
The third airport is being built near the Lake Terkos in northern Istanbul.
Thus, the total number of airports in Turkey will reach 57.
