NTPC to add 30 GW coal capacity by FY32; eyes entry into power distribution, green hydrogen, and battery storage

New Delhi: NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated power utility, has increased its coal-based power generation capacity addition target to 30,000 MW by the financial year 2031–32, up from its earlier projection of 26,000 MW by 2030–31, company sources said.

For the current financial year 2025–26, the company aims to add 3,580 MW of thermal capacity, over five times the 660 MW added in FY25. On the renewable energy front, NTPC has targeted 5,000 MW of capacity addition in FY26, up from 3,312 MW in FY25.

According to the sources, NTPC’s current total installed and commercial capacity stands at 80,020 MW, including 62,854 MW of thermal capacity, 6,511 MW of liquid fuel-based, 3,757 MW of hydro, 6,211.5 MW of solar and 686 MW of wind capacity.

The government has projected peak electricity demand to cross 270 GW this summer. In response, the Centre plans to add 80 GW of coal-based capacity by 2032 while maintaining a focus on renewable energy.

In the renewable segment, NTPC Green—through its joint venture with ONGC, ONGC NTPC Green Pvt Ltd (ONGPL)—has acquired Ayana Renewable Power for Rs 6,248.5 crore and aims to develop 19 GW of capacity by FY27, with an investment of Rs 1 lakh crore.

The group has also entered the nuclear segment and plans to commission 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047, contributing to India’s 100 GW nuclear energy target. It is currently developing 2.8 GW of nuclear capacity in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in partnership with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd.

NTPC recently called for expressions of interest from global firms for cooperation in localising pressurised water reactor (PWR) technology and establishing nuclear plants of up to 15 GW capacity.

Internationally, NTPC is working on a 50 MW solar project in Sri Lanka through a joint venture with the Ceylon Electricity Board and is exploring similar projects in Africa and Saudi Arabia. The company is also in discussions with Eskom, South Africa’s electricity utility, for O&M and consultancy projects.

In coal mining, NTPC aims to produce 50 million tonnes in FY25 through its subsidiary NTPC Mining, up from 45.72 million tonnes in FY24.

NTPC is also evaluating an entry into the power distribution business while maintaining its focus on new areas such as e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro, waste-to-energy, green hydrogen, and chemicals like ethanol and methanol.>
