Ubicquia® Paves the Way for Future Ultra-Dense 5G Networks With Commercial Availability of Its Ubimetro™ Streetlight-Powered Small Cell

With Its Integrated Baseband, Radio, Antenna and New Software Enhancements, Ubimetro Is Now Available for Plug-and-Play Streetlight and C-RAN Deployments

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS AMERICAS -- Ubicquia®, the global leader in simply smart, simply connected network and IoT platforms for smart cities, today announced that its Ubimetro™ streetlight-powered small cell is now commercially available for worldwide deployment, with key product enhancements that will help scale and accelerate 4G and 5G rollouts.

Smart City to Connected City
Voracious data demand is driving the growth of 5G and the need for smart, connected cities.

Introduced earlier this year at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Ubimetro has garnered strong interest from mobile operators for its ease of implementation, integrated baseband, radio and antenna design, and low total cost of ownership. Ubimetro and Ubicquia’s other smart city products will be on display this week at Mobile World Congress Americas in Stand S.2150, South Hall.

“Our patent-pending NEMA socket-based Ubimetro is truly unique, integrating baseband, radio and antenna, along with fiber, Ethernet and broadband powerline backhaul – all in a lightweight compact enclosure,” said Tre Zimmerman, Ubicquia's co-founder and CTO. “Our recent software enhancements now make Ubimetro C-RAN compliant, as well. Leveraging C-RAN's use of network virtualization and data center processing capabilities, Ubimetro allows mobile operators to meet increasing requirements relating to latency, data rates and traffic volume through the support of resource pooling, scalability, layer interworking and spectral efficiency. Ubimetro is based on Qualcomm’s FSM9016 and FSM9055 systems-on-chip, with versions designed to support dual selectable bands, LAA and CBRS.”

“Our focus has been on creating a suite of small cell products that lay the foundation for scaling and accelerating 5G deployments,” said Ian Aaron, Ubicquia CEO. “For 5G to be a reality, the deployment of fat poles and large antenna arrays placed every four to five poles will be neither cost-effective, timely, nor attractive for a city. Our Ubimetro and new C-RAN capabilities are designed to address the challenges in scaling small cell deployments – whether technical, regulatory, power, implementation or economic – while improving the overall consumer experience.”

With more than 360 million streetlights around the world – including nearly 53 million in the U.S. alone – there is no shortage of sites ripe for deployment of Ubimetro and Ubicquia’s other streetlight-based products, the Ubicell network and Internet of Things (IoT) router and Ubihub™ gigabit switch. With conversion from legacy streetlights to the LEDs essential for connected smart lighting on the rise, LED and smart street lighting will create a combined $64 billion global opportunity by 2027 (Source: Statista).

Ubicquia will be demonstrating its suite of smart city products this week during Mobile World Congress Americas, September 12-14, 2018, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Last week, in the run-up to the show, Ubicquia announced that former vice chairman of AT&T Ralph de la Vega has joined its board of directors as vice chairman. Ubicquia will also participate in the MWC Americas Sustainable Smart Cities tour, which highlights diverse examples of cities leveraging their technology investments to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Notes:
C-RAN = centralized radio access network
LAA = Licensed Assisted Access
CBRS = Citizen Broadband Radio Service
